How to Split Your Excel Spreadsheet
SplitXL works entirely inside your client browser using high-speed Web Workers and WebAssembly.
Upload or Drop File
Select your .xlsx, .xls, or .csv spreadsheet. Instant in-browser preview scans the first 20 rows and counts all data rows.
Choose Split Mode
Pick by number of parts (2-10), rows per file, file size (for Email or WhatsApp limits), or column value. Live size estimation updates automatically.
Download Verified ZIP
Get all generated parts compressed into a single ZIP archive, along with individual download links and a cryptographic zero-data-loss verification report.
Why is My Excel File Too Large to Email?
Most email providers (like Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo) enforce a strict 20 MB to 25 MB attachment limit. Here is why files grow out of control and how to fix them:
1. Invisible "Ghost Rows"
Selecting entire rows or columns and applying formatting (fills, borders) creates over 1,000,000 empty styled rows that Excel saves into the XML. SplitXL automatically strips these empty rows upon splitting.
2. High-Resolution Images
Pasting high-res screenshots or company logos increases file size drastically. Consider resizing graphics or stripping non-essential images before distribution.
3. Stale Pivot Table Caches
Pivot tables duplicate underlying dataset records in a hidden cache. Unchecking "Save source data with file" in PivotTable options can halve file size.
4. Use SplitXL File Size Mode
If your data is legitimately huge (50,000+ real records), use SplitXL's "By File Size" mode with the 20 MB preset to slice it into sendable parts in seconds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about splitting large Excel spreadsheets safely.
How are odd numbers of rows handled when splitting into 2 parts?
If your file has an odd number of data rows (e.g. 10,001 rows), the extra remainder row is automatically placed in Part 1 (5,001 rows in Part 1 and 5,000 rows in Part 2) ensuring zero data loss.
Does each part have the column headers?
Yes! When "First row is header" is selected, the header row is copied to the top of both Part 1 and Part 2.
